We lacquer on layer upon layer of sunscreen to protect our skin from harmful UV rays. However, we often overlook a very delicate part of our face; our eyes. Overexposure of the eyes to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation can lead to a variety of serious health problems.

So in addition to keeping you looking good, sunglasses are the perfect accessory to shield you from a variety of afflictions including cataracts, photokeratitis (basically a sunburn of the eye), and even possible vision loss.

Picking out the perfect pair of shades can be quite an adventure. While we are attracted to the style and color of a design the value of its protection is also paramount.

Here are a few points to help you select the right shades for panache and protection…

1) When purchasing a new pair of shades protecting your eyes should be your top priority. Make sure that you select protective eyewear that is UVA- and UVB-protected. Experts recommend sunglasses that reflect or filter out 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays.

2) Names like Oakley, Ray-Ban, and Chanel have made a fortune peddling expensive sun spectacles. Nevertheless, a hefty price tag does not necessarily guarantee protection. There are several affordable brands out there that work just as well as those high-end competitors.

3) Decide on a style that fits your face. Whether you opt for aviators, flip-ups, or oversized “Jackie O’s;” find a style that makes you feel comfortable. Consider the shape of the glasses in relation to your face. Try them on and make sure the shades fit properly. The bottom line is that if you’re not comfortable with them, you won’t wear them.

4) Consider the lenses’ color not just for fashion but also for clarity. The color of the lenses can affect how well you identify and differentiate colors. This may cause problems while driving when you need to clearly distinguish the colors of a traffic light.

5) Some solar shields come with removable lenses of different colors. A multi-lens option allows you to tailor your eye gear to your recreation of choice. This is a great choice for the sunglasses devotee that requires performance in a variety of situations.
